Home -  At least eight people were killed in head-on collision between passenger bus and coach due to fog at Multan’s Vihari road. Rescue sources said the injured were rushed to hospital where the condition of several people is said to be critical. The death toll may go up in the incident, they added. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed for providing best medical facilities to the injured. Read the full story here. 

Multan - Sukkhur Motorway Approved

Home - On a proposal of Ministry of Communications, ECNEC approved the revised PC-I of Sukkhur-Multan Section (392 KMs)of Peshawar- Karachi Motorway Project at a total cost of Rs 314,997.280 million. The section covers the areas of districts of Sukkhur, Ghotki, Rahimyar Khan, Bahawalpur and Multan in the provinces of Sind and Punjab . The Committee was informed that the project was being implemented on EPC basis and therefore there would be no cost escalation during the implementation of the project. The meeting was informed that despite upward revision of the project cost, a saving of Rs. 112 billion has still been achieved through deep scrutiny. ECNEC also discussed and approved the revised PC-I for KKH Phase-II (Havelian to Thakot 118.057 KM) project at a total cost of Rs.136, 659.60 million. Read the full story here. 

Multan Tea House - A Good Start

Home - Multan Tea House will be opened for literary figures of South Punjab on December 15, said Multan District Coordination Officer (DCO) Zahid Saleem Gondal here on Wednesday. He said that a special committee comprising government officials had been formed to allot membership of the Tea House to literary persons hailing from South Punjab. A performa would be issued to the persons intending for membership and those meeting the defined criteria, would be awarded membership. The membership fee was Rs 1,000 per year. However, the literary persons of 65 year old or above, would be given membership facility free of cost. An endowment fund for betterment and welfare of literary persons will be introduced very soon as working was in progress in this regard, said Gondal. Gulf Air, Bahrain’s principal flag carrier, is going to start its operations at the Multan International Airport (MIAP) on December 14, 2015

Home - Gulf Air would become the seventh international airline to start operations at MIAP. PIA, Shaheen Air International, Fly Dubai, Airblue, Qatar Airways and Emirates already conduct operations in Multan. “Initially, Gulf Air would operate three weekly flights,” an official source of the Civil Aviation Authority said on Friday. The airline currently operates scheduled services to 42 destinations in 23 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, the source informed. Pegasus Airline, the second airline from Turkey, is also expected to begin its operations from Multan soon, added the source. The lobbying to win Multan throne has begun and the aspirants for the Mayor and Chairman District Council offices started efforts to convince the PML-N leadership for their nomination

At least three groups - Ansari, Qureshi and Arrain - want to get their candidate nominated for the Mayor office while Bosan, Dogar, Syed and Dewan Groups are making efforts to bring their Chairman at District Council. All the groups have established their contacts with the newly elected Chairmen/Vice Chairmen of union councils and efforts are being made to convince them to support their candidate in Mayoral and Chairman District Council run. Local Bodies Elections In Multan - Who will be the winner?

Polling continued in a peaceful manner in Multan city and most of the polling stations were witnessed thronged by the voters here on Saturday. No untoward incident was reported except a few involving exchange of arguments among supporters of candidates, most of them triggered by complaints of slow pace of polling amid rush of voters waiting outside. At a female polling station of ward-2 in UC-35, 80 votes were polled out of total registered voters out of 900 till 1200 hours. Over 100 votes were polled out of 688 at another female polling station of ward No 4, UC-35 1200 hours. At a male polling station of ward No 4, UC-35, 136 votes were polled out of total 800 till 1200 hours. At a male polling station of ward-5 in UC-35, total 259 votes were cast out of 1159 votes till 1210 hours. Over 150 votes were polled out of 1008 at a male polling station of ward-6 in UC-35 till 1215 hours. Over 400 votes were polled at a female polling station of ward-5, UC-35 out of total 1100 votes

The country’s top economic decision-making body on Saturday approved the construction of the 230km Lahore-Multan section of the Karachi-Lahore Motorway but withheld clearance of a project for installing smart electricity meters due to a row between two key ministries

The $500 million project to install smart meters in areas supplied electricity by the Lahore and Islamabad power distribution companies was left unapproved after the ministries of planning and water and power were unable to reconcile their differences. The chairman of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC), Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, asked both ministries on Saturday to sit down together and resolve their differences over the technology and specifications of the smart meters which are to be installed, a planning ministry official said. Last month, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), which is headed by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, conditionally cleared both the projects after sitting over them for almost 10 months. A tough competition is expected between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) in the elections for Multan’s municipal corporation and the district council

Analysts say the leading party will likely need support from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) to form government. With several pockets of support in the district, the PPP is likely to play an important role in both the municipal corporation and the district council. The three parties have fielded chairmen and vice-chairmen panels in all 68 UCs of the municipal corporation. Unlike most others districts in the province, the PML-N stalwarts in Multan have been successful in resolving their differences ahead of the election.
